Refurbished an estate sale cross slide vise and got a years of use out of it with low impact use and drill press projects. Needed a specific action vise for a quick rebarreling job and the vice held things perfectly so I decided to give it a try. A 3 foot breaker bar on a massive tap wrench holding the barrel, and the vice went out with flying colors spraying chunks of cast junk around the shop. Seems to have sheared the nut for the vise itself, as well as the nut on the slide and bent the ball screw. Definitely in the market for something with a lot more strength!

Our Wilton has finally had enough. The threads have gotten chewed up enough that it will only open about two inches and that is getting harder to do.

This vice has seen some years of abuse, it finally gave out with with a very tight swivel, missing 5 of the 6 jaw bolts, will no longer lock in place just free swivels and loosens up constantly. I ended up welding the swivel to my table (last photo) then I started to break my tools

A Tale as old as time. Cheap Chinese vise that I’ve had for only a couple years but has been put in full time use lasted only a month before beating a pin out of a bracket cracked the stationary jaw! Luckily was able to get the job done but an upgrade is in order!

@sasquatchdab A code was sent in messages, it sucks when a vise fails right in the middle of a job.

My father is a hobby-machinist. He’s got all sorts of tools and metal working machines he uses for his own practice. Last month he was helping me build a custom mount for my boat dock. We had a bunch of pipes we needed to slightly bend, we heated them up with a blow torch and locked them in the vise to bend. Needless to say after many bends two grown men pushing on it cause the old metal to give out. I did some research later and found out it shouldn’t be used like that… So his birthday is around the corner and I’m looking to replace his vise with a new one.

He told me after it already had a crack in it so the shoving was the final straw for it. He also said how much he hates this vise becuase it never holds its position and shifts on him. So he probably is due for replacement anyway. Still need to get his concrete fixed from the large chip where the jaw fell.

Yikes, thanks for sharing your story and a great birthday gift indeed. A code was sent in messages.

My little Scout vice gave up the ghost while I was hammering out some old rivets from an AK parts kit. The swivel base cracked and flexes with any force applied, and the vice itself lacks a better way to mount it without the base. Now I’m in school for machining and I need a real vice! Have enjoyed your content on youtube and thanks for the great forum!
