NEW Video Discussion: "Why Did This Giant Vintage Grinder Stop Working?"

If you didn’t know, we’ve released a brand new video this Father’s Day weekend!

Jason and Wyatt decided to (finally) address the broken grinder in the shop, and they uncover a few unexpected surprises throughout the video.

You may have noticed this video has a bit of a different tone than other videos of ours. We decided to use this as an opportunity to approach this as we would television or streaming content, with the same amount of care and polish (including a new voice from Narrator Phil Freeman). Consider this video some kind of “test” or “proof of concept” for that process.

What did you think of it? Are there any thoughts you have about the grinder? Did you like this style of video? Let us know your thoughts below!

I watched the video, and it was really cool. I enjoyed the television format; it reminded me of an early 2010s TV show! It’s a strange feeling realizing we were talking about 15 years ago, and it feels like it was just yesterday!

This is just my opinion, but I felt like the announcer voice was a bit annoying and out of place. I don’t know that it was just that there was an announcer voice. I think it was just that the voice didn’t align to the feel of the rest of the video and the dialog was a bit over the top.

You do know Phil is a real person? Are you saying you don’t like his voice? I happen to like Phil’s voice.

No offense to Phil. I’m sure there is nothing wrong with his voice, and I wasn’t saying his voice is annoying in general (obviously since I don’t know Phil). I was just saying that I don’t think how it was voiced / the inflection used and the way the dialog was phrased aligned to the rest of the content in the video. To me, it came across as a bit forced and over the top. It didn’t align to the rest of the tone, I guess. That’s just my honest feedback that was solicited. I may be the only one that thinks that though and can summarily be ignored. No worries, either way.

I agree with the voice over narrating as the episode progressed. It didn’t seem needed. Otherwise, a simple yet great video.

I like the format and the narration but agree it was a bit over the top.
The narration helped the cadence of the video without the need for a lot of angle changes and repeating of info by the on screen talent, but the inflection was reminiscent of those sensationalist Discovery Channel shows that hype up nothing. I’m thinking about the gold finding shows and such.
FWIW, it’s not something I would have come here to bring up, I am just answering a question that was asked.
Generally soaking, I liked it and would have enjoyed a little bit more of the b-roll of how the parts came off and went back on.
Extra points for un-needed extra geeky info like RPM at full speed, surface speed at the front, and price/ options of replacement wheels.

I really like the voiceovers you have in your videos. They explain some things easier that aren’t talked about in the videos sometimes, so I think they are needed…in my opinion. I also really like the almost cartoonish, animated graphics in your videos. I really really like them.
I feel that Phil has an excellent voice for voice over work. It’s very clear, professional sounding, and has that rough “gravel” that just sounds like a man’s man. I feel like this is a guy knows how to build a full set of kitchen cabinets or can wire a circuit breaker panel, and has an chainsaw, and oh yeah… he can weld.

But…… I really like the animated graphics in your videos, and no offense intended to Phil, or to you Jason, but your normal sounding, more easily relatable voice goes much better with those animated graphics than Phil’s does. Again, in my opinion.

That being said, I think if I heard Phil’s professional sounding voice in your videos from the beginning, and then heard your voice… I’d probably prefer his voice as it does sound a little more professional.
