Fein magnetic vice

A couple of years ago I purchased a Fein magnetic vice to use for portable welding, drilling, and grinding. It is very versatile and handy but has a major flaw when using it for welding. The vice can be removed from the magnetic base by depressing a steel spring and sliding it off the anodized aluminum v tailed slide. The problem is the first time I used the vice to hold a small tig welding job, the welding current conducted through the small flat steel spring and damaged it. I have had difficulty sourcing a replacement spring and now use the vice without it. I always have to remember to direct ground to the part, or risk arcing the anodized slide and destroying it. Someday I will drill and tap for a jumper ground from the base to the vice. I sure would like to see an improved, more robust version of this vice.

I’ve used my Mag vise for a little over 2 years. Always ground to the part I’m welding. It is a bit hard when the parts are small but still manageable. My only complaint is I wish it had a larger clamping capability. Other wise its been a solid tool.

By the way they have a beefier vice they now offer. Price is a bit high, might have to bite the bullet and buy one later down the road.

Here’s a link to the new vise: I like that they added the catch tray for shavings. With the original one you have to pull the top off to get it cleaned out good.
