Metric vs Imperial

Hi,

G’day from Australia, loving the videos and the direct style of speaking, I have just bought the Belt Grinder plans and am keen to make my own. I was surprised to find them in feet and inches only rather than also metric measurements. Any chance you could publish in both?

You probably need to better define what you are asking for… Are you just looking for the dimensions to be converted to metric using the same (imperial dimension) materials, or are you asking for the whole unit to be redesigned to be built from metric materials and hardware, and using metric measurements?

I would settle for simple conversions from imperial to metric as I can work it out. But Jason has a great channel and in Australia we live in a metric world so yes i would love the unit to have a full metric redesign. Remember it is only the USA and Liberia that truly live in the imperial world.

Not really. The US inch was standardized in metric units over 6 decades ago, which merely codified the situation that had been in place for decades before that. At the same time, many things that are made outside the US to what are nominally metric dimensions, are still based in an imperial reality. As one example, pretty much every automobile that is manufactured, regardless of country, still rolls on wheels sized in inches. We are all surrounded by both systems whether we are aware of it or not.

Personally I am getting to the point where I don’t really care anymore what system of measurement a project requires. Yeah, I still on the whole prefer imperial, and my shop is overwhelmingly equipped that way, but I’ll use whatever system makes the most sense for the task at hand. If I’m making something that was originally designed in metric dimensions, then that’s what I’ll use. It’s just a lot easier to get a tape measure or ruler or micrometer that matches the measurements the thing was originally designed to, than to convert. If fractions of an inch are really that much of a challenge, you can always use Google to convert for you. Just go through your drawing and write the metric dimension next to the original imperial one.
