Note that each part is restrained in six- count’em six degrees of freedom. Some by clamps and table, some by clamps and other parts.
The part surfaces that rest against the table or other fixture table components become “special” as their variation affects the location and orientation of the parts in the fixture. In GD&T speak these surfaces (or partial surfaces) can be designated as datum features (or datum targets). These datum features are then used to establish a 3-D coordinate system (datum reference frame) in which any point on the part can be specified.
