I bought this Yost 208 8 Inch Vice about 5 years ago when a large crane company had a going out of business sale. They used this and another vice together to repack massive hydraulic cylinders. It’s never been broken but the screw is hard to turn with one hand and the handle will try and nip you if you’re not careful. (Its lived outside a solid portion of its life)
I kept watching Jason and his development of his vice and took a gamble on his hardtail. I thought I would keep using this Yost an even amount when the hardtail came. I couldn’t have been more wrong, I barely touch this vice because the hardtail feels like a swiss watch compared to all my other vices and the clamping force is incredible!
I actually have to be aware of items in the hardtail because one to many pulls on that handle and it will deform or mar what i’m working on. So in short I’ve made the decision to sell the Yost. I’m pretty sure it’s a Yost 208 and I wanted to ask how much do these vices go for these days?
Just trying to buy either another hardtail or some more fixtures for my fireball table.
I have a few other old large vices that work better than this one. This one being the biggest in the fleet. I’d like to have someone take it and restore it.
Unless Jason wants content for comparison but I “think” his Reed is close to this size. I just don’t have the time to give this vice justice.
Plus I now have a small addiction to getting more fireball fixtures for my table, its been a game changer for the shop.
I’d love to pick Abom79’s brain but I never can seem to get a response
Ive seen prices ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 depending on the condition.
They are mostly old ebay / marketplace listings. So you never know exactly. This particular model was rare because of the swivel. Most of these models sold with a solid mount base.
I see no repairs on it and does work well for its age, assumed abuse and being left outside.
I would however be very interested in more fixtures for my fireball table (which is amazing) or another hardtail
Lower Alabama is my general location. Depending on where you are in the US shipping costs are not cheap. I should have kept the Hardtail box but I thought for sure I’d keep this one. I wish I could speak with Abom79 about this model, I’m sure he would find it interesting and could answer some questions I have.
I really don’t know how to price this vice. What someone asks for and what one actually gets is usually a gulf of differance.
At this point I’m guessing I just put it on marketplace and ask a price then see what happens. (I minorly dread the “Is this availble“ bs and abject low ballers)
I’m in no rush to sell it and would like to see it restored or at the very least kept inside.
@Vanguard Would you be upset if I ended up breaking it for science. I know I don’t need to convince you that the Hardtail vise is a great vise. But I still have a long way to go to convince most of the world.
Material science question for you: does steel of that type get brittle with age? If so, testing it may be a lost cause. Fun, but not of terrific value.
If you are doing it for science and to further your mission to make people understand the power of your vice.
It would be a great honor.
I know you respect these vices but they have limits and as big and bulky as this Yost it would seem it would have so much clamping power. Unfortunately it really doesn’t, they are so overbuilt for the actual clamping power they have which really isn’t alot. It’s why you can’t hurt these vices.
Something you have pointed out several times now. I truly believe your vices will be sought after in future generations. Especially the few USA made ones.
Besides, even if you break it. Your one of a few people I know for a fact you could repair it better than new or find / know of a craftsman that would truly enjoy restoring it (Preferably to a youtuber so I can watch it be restored)
