We just received out G2 table a few weeks ago. I was told before ordering that is had the “Dragon Scale” coating on it. I want to verify that is correct? The coating on my table seems like “black oxide” not the dragon scale.
The coating seems to rub off fairly easily if sliding even a flat smooth block over the surface.
When we first received and while cleaning the oil off I noticed a few spots had a thicker “oil” layer that was a lot darker in color. it almost looked like black paint. It wiped right off with brake clean and the rag became very dark black in color.
Dragon Scale is a chemical process that changes the physical surface of the table or fixture. It Improves the surface hardness of the cast iron. The Dragon scale is insoluble, meaning that it can’t be dissolved by a chemical. One great feature of the Dragon scale is that it absorbs oil and other lubricants. This is what’s rubbing off. The oil in the Dragon scale helps fight against rust, and weld spatter. The lubricant or oil makes the color of the coating and brighter therefore, oils with different properties provide different degrees of darkness ranging from light to dark grey to black. You want the oil to be absorbed this is what helps the spatter resistance. The light scratches are a cosmetic and doesn’t hurt the performance of the table. Nitride coatings also suffer from cosmetic scratches, It’s just going to happen. The contrast between the light scratches and the dark color makes the scratches look worse that they are. The Dragon Scale is a extra layer of protection that we offer for free. You’ll find the performance benefits will out weigh the physical appearance.
