Is it worth purchasing a fixture table or building one at home? I’d recommend that if you make money fabricating, then buy a table. It is well worth the money. On the other hand, if you are not making money using a fixture table, and need a surface for work at home, build a table. Share your thoughts below!
Jason has an old video showing how to build a welding table from scratch and getting it perfectly level. It was one of his first videos (and is quite long) but a lot of people have found it very helpful for getting a cost-effective table that’s better than a piece of plate steel.
I have to make room in my shop but I really want the 8.5 ft one. Saw it at SEMA last year and it would speed things up for me quite a bit. The big fixture block especially
i know he sells a new table now, but are the plans for the old table design still available? the video is a how to build it as far as procedure, but the materials and specs I’m sure were in a set of plans he used to sell. I’d like to build my own using his Fireball Fixture plates while using that table’s rough design with some size alterations to accomodate my needs.
Unfortunately I do not think they are. I could be mistaken.
darn. would be nice to have something to start from. would be really nice to have a cad file to modify. so i’ll be starting from scratch and I’ve never used solid works or cad… this is gonna be fun…
thanks for the quick reply though
There are a lot of good tips in that video - it’s worth the watch for those - not just the ideas on a home made table.
Speaking for myself, I’m slow as molasses in January, so as satisfying as it would be to build a table, I’d rather just buy one. I’ll be holding on until later in the year and see what the smaller cast iron tables run or possibly do a hybrid and replace the top of my table with the table topper. I’d quite like the side fixturing ability though.
We’re expanding the fireball table sizes and system through out the next year. We should have something for everyone. Will keep everyone updated.
Love the idea of being able to start out small, but if someone decides they need a bigger table they can be linked together seamlessly.
I have started making my own table- with square plates, 4 levelling bolts on each plate.
What size should I make the holes to work with the 5/8 system? Do I go over size to provide clearance? Or are the 5/8 fixtures less than 5/8 to provide clearance ?
Make the hole .625. The manufacturer puts the clearance in the tooling.
What clearance is appropriate? If I make some of my own tooling, would 0.623 be too sloppy in the .625 hole?
