My version of the "tube and plate" vise

I wanted to build this vise ever since Jason put out the original video. I bought the plans, all the recommended hardware from McMaster Carr and all the material and then I didn’t get around to it for a couple years. In the end I’m glad it took me a while because I was able to use the jaws from the 6” hardtail. I had to make some design changes due to my lack of a lathe, mill or water jet, and I changed the shape based on a video of a Russian guy building his. I also shortened it a little bit since I’m just a hobbyist in a one car garage but it still opens to over 11 inches. I absolutely love this thing and it might be my favorite thing I’ve ever built and I thought I’d share it here because it started off as Jason’s design. If anyone’s interested I can post more about how it’s built and the changes I made.

Nice work!

Thank you

I like the jaw revision. Very strong design

Here is my version of the Fireball DIY vise. 4x3 tube steel outer, 3.5x2.5 tube steel inner. 3/8” plate for sides. I did use the thrust bearing and needle bearing combo like the diy vise. I have a lather so I went with turned parts for the swivel base.

Jason, any chance I could bring one of these to your shop for testing?

I can’t help myself— It looks like a Tesla Truck Vise.

Looks very clean. Excellent fabrication.

I’ve watched Jason’s video on making a vise along with a few others. I don’t have a shop per say just my tiny garage but told myself to try to build one as I can’t afford a hardtail. I don’t have the knowledge nor the tools to make a swivel base. Took me way longer to build than it should of but I tried!! Not perfect , few things I could have done differently but it works and im happy!!

Looks great to me. The concept it to make it your own and modify the design to fit your needs. I’m really digging the CAT livery. Looks like a race car

Thank you for taking the time to comment!!

All you need is a router and some patience. Nice job on the vise.

Im sure you learned a lot building it. Looks pretty good to me, its not about how long it took, its about you were able to finish it and it works!

I think you should feel pretty good after making that!

Thank you for the reply, and it was definitely a learning experience for me!
