New red fireball combination squares

I purchased both new red fireball combination squares.

After using them both for a few days I noticed both were not square. After they I started checking both of them and both are out of square about 0.5mm - 1mm, most noticeable when using a 600mm/24” rule blade.

I contact fireball and provide some videos with the issues. I asked if other combinations squares were checked, this question was not answered. They sent out replacement combination square.

I received the replacement square yesterday and checked them straight away. Both are out of square.

Has anyone else checked their new combination squares? Has any problems?

In my opinion this type of “adjustable rule square” is never a precision instrument and should not be used as one. This would be most evident with the longer blades used. For “fast and dirty” work these will be adequate, but not for true square needs. In this particular design, the mating surface for the rule is just too small to achieve a prediction of square.

You can also notice on the original (larger) adjustable rule square there are two set screws to adjust the rule to square. There is a video on those to show how to do a square “calibration”. The new, smaller, adjustable square does not have that mechanism, and should not be relied upon to be in perfect square.

I’m aware the first fireball combination square with adjustment screws, I have both.

I’ve a vast collection of combination squares from starrett, wright and moore and Mitutoyo and they are all bang on square.
