Fireball combination square isn’t the largest on the market

I recently received my ultimate combination square kit. I got a cast iron and aluminum set, with metric blade. Over all I am happy with the set.

My only complaints isn’t not the largest combination square on the market like fireball claim on their website. The starrett H8 is larger.

The blades supplied are the cheaper PEC stainless blades, not the thicker tempered steel blades. If the kit came with the thicker tempered blades with gold coating, the kit would be 10/10.

What’s your definition of larger? If you mean the Starrett’s larger price point they definitely got Fireball beat. What about larger number of sides, larger face width, larger knob, larger weight. The starrett I believe also uses a non standard blade. What about larger number of attachment points for accessories? What about number of ways to calibrate the blade? Why does the Starrett use such a puny knob? You have to take your gloves off to turn it?

Fireball has a new squares coming in the next few weeks. The 3827 and the 1826. 1” wide and 3” wide 8” long bodies. I might even make a 10”or 12” versions.

Them new squares you have coming look nice.

The starrett is 8” long, is my definition of larger. The width ( in my opinion ) doesn’t count. 80% of my work a standard wide combination square will do the job. You are correct the blade is wider than a standard blade. Back in the 30s starrett offered the blade in different lengths and 4 lengths in metric. Price point doesn’t bother me, you are talking to someone who has a vast collection of combination square, I spent thousands. The starrett has the small nibs that can be filed. I been using a starrett forge steel head square for 20 years daily, I even dropped it 12 meters off a boom lift. It’s still square to this day, I’ve never filed the nibs. In my opinion the calibration screws, meh, handy to have, but are they necessary? Maybe on the aluminum. I don’t have any trouble undoing the screw knob on starrett, would depend on the gloves being used.

Can you offer tempered steel gold blades?
