Stamping part numbers?

Hi all!
Our little shop needs some help with a reliable method to stamp part numbers on weldments so the installation crew can put them in the correct positions in the structure without delay or confusion.

We have the normal small letter and number stamps, but would like something larger and more obvious in the field, under a coat of paint. McMaster has a 1/2" stamp set that doesn’t break the bank - though my boss might think it does. Is this something that can mark mild steel plate with a firm hammer tap? Or is there a better way to mark? Welding on numbers would be time consuming except for large weldments.

I’ve seen engraving pens used to mark part numbers.

I tried the engraving Dremel on a couple scraps, and painted over. Looks great!
Also curious about the E Mark - looks really cool but probably a bit pricey for our needs?
We’ll give the Dremel a shot on our next project and see how we like that.
