I love your videos but I’m very disappointed that you turn off comments. I don’t want to have to leave YouTube to make or read comments.
I wonder if the comment were turned off after his last video “Why Do Good Welders Get This Wrong?” Over all I enjoyed the video but thought it was a disservice to the fabrication shops to not first verify they understood what GD&T is.
I absolutely agree Jason.
The rest is directed to Fireball Tools:
I may only be an only an occasional viewer but turning off comments on YouTube is a REALLY BAD idea. I would suggest that over half the traffic will simply never return, or even if they do they will never interact with your site (except to add a comment like this). I am one of those. You may feel, ‘good riddance’ but this is the only time I’ll ever come to your site or watch your channel until you make it feel like a community again. Trouble makers are few and far between. Mistakes on your part are unavoidable. Half of YouTube, for better or worse, is the comment section.
Martin. Grow a pair and reinstate the comments.
I agree that YouTube comments should be on for the videos. Yes, there are a lot of trolls and haters, but a lot of good discussion happens in the comments of videos too. I get that by driving the traffic here for the discussion that it’s archived better, but I’m not sure if it’s totally worth the tradeoff.
How about this, If you have something to say on YouTube you make a video about the topic you want to talk about. YouTube is for videos. It’s why Google named it “YOU TUBE” show us who you are. As for the comment section on YouTube, it’s trash and people can’t stay on topic. Videos are more helpful then comments.
I’m only making an account on here because I was forced to. Youtube has evolved from simply a video service into a full on community. Disabling comments is just not the way to go. I used to be subscribed to your channel, but I am going to unsubscribe because this is a really unfriendly move. Just because you don’t like some of the comments doesn’t mean you should take a “well then go away” attitude. All that you are doing is alienating new viewers. For most people, it isn’t worth the extra effort to go and make a new account merely to comment on your videos. Other Youtubers don’t do this. In fact, they engage in the community, instead of seeming like they are insecure and closed to any critisism at all.
I think he did that because in YouTube
to many people make comments off topic.
And Jason wants to be able to talk to people
About his tools and what they like about them but when you have thousands of comments,
People that have questions will never get answers.
If you post here it’s Daily answers from him and the amazing team at fireball.
And that’s just my opinion.
And I think is was a smart move.
People can share images and links here, not possible with youtube comments. There will be less comments overall, there are definitely trade offs, but it’s what we’re going with for now.
That seems like a bad trade off, comments good or bad drive engagement.
Yeah I don’t really see the reason to take off comments. Jason can ignore the comments and answer forum posts.
The real reason I came here is bacuase I saw a short on YouTube about testing straps but am unable to find it on the website. It would be nice to just be able to at least click a link to watch the video or just let me watch it on YouTube.
Hate to break it to you…but YouTube is a social media platform that specializes in video. A HUGE part of it is discussion - no matter what you think of that discussion.
Yes, they could make the layout way better for discussion…but people often watch videos to have a discussion. Maybe leading people elsewhere for the discussion part is a good idea…but you have to be able to find the discussion that goes with the video, and they Fireball is not doing that well.
Without videos Identifying or showing who you are or what you do on YouTube or any social media in my opinion a commenter doesn’t have any credibility. You could be a bot, spam or..?
Why would a comment hold more weight on an opinion than the content creator? It’s ok to not agree with the video content, make a video explaining your opinion on the topic.
Same goes with the forum. Post some helpful information with photos of who you are and you’ll be taken seriously
My point is that you cannot find the part on the forum (easily) to make a comment or have that discussion. If the forum were set up that you could do so…it would be different. I couldn’t even find it with the search feature.
As far as a “commenter doesnt have any credibility”…you are saying that you don’t care what anyone else thinks or that you don’t care if people discuss your videos. Bots and spam aren’t having discussions…and while those posts happen on YT it’s increasingly rare and people instantly recognize them to report and ignore.
A comment doesn’t hold more weight than the creator. But questions and comments help people learn, and they also inform the creator about what people are interested in - whether it be new ideas or a follow-up video…or maybe pointing out a critical flaw in one point that could lead to a follow-up video. As a YouTuber…engagement drives the algorithm and also informs ideas for future content.
And to your point of “Post some helpful information with photos of who you are and you’ll be taken seriously” …there are plenty of channels I subscribe to and give money to that I never comment on, but I enjoy reading the conversation around the video - and I’m mature enough to recognize the trolls and the morons and also see the good questions and answers.
Again - I’m fine with all of that being on Discourse - but the layout makes it hard to find.
As-is…there is little discussion. And for me and a lot of others, little reason to watch the videos because it makes it more like passively watching TV and moving on.
It makes me sad, because your videos are amazing and would be a great source of discussion - and I’m not talking about discussing how you suck or what you did wrong or what you could do better…I mean real, meaningful discussion that could lead to a new video or be a learning experience beyond the video.
You seem overly defensive and imply that whether you agree or disagree - the only way we should be able to respond is to make a video in response. I respect you GREATLY as the creator. The ‘social’ aspect is something I think could be better.
Are you implying that I should read and reply to every comment on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Tictok, Rumble, ect? Fireball has 6-7 social media platforms. These platforms collect 1000s of comments weekly. It’s impossible to have a conversation or read every comment posted on all the fireball content, past and present. That’s why this forum exists. How many Content creators or businesses make a forum just to answer questions? I don’t know of a single one. We’re doing our best to help you get the information you need.
What questions do you have? Just make a post on a topic if you wish to have a conversation about.
I am specifically stating (nothing implied at all) that you allow your viewers and fans to discuss your videos amongst themselves. If you choose to read the discussions to find a video idea - that’s OK (and is what a lot of YouTubers do). But nobody expects you or any channel to get involved in the discussion.
I’d make a post on the ratchet strap topic if I could find it. You are ignoring the main point of why I posted completely…because you shouldn’t be expected to be able to keep up with all this…and you can’t…and you wouldn’t have to if you just left YouTube comments turned on (which also feeds the algorithm, by the way, even if the comments are negative).
I’m a viewer who got your video in the alogritm. I wanted to read comments. They were off. I came here to read discussion on the video. I could not find it. That’s basically where it ended. I now have no reason to subscribe or go further. I am sure that I’m not alone.
You don’t have to agree with me…I hoped you would take it as feedback to make THIS forum more user friendly to access discussion and a fan-base around your videos. Instead you took it personally and argued. Which doesn’t seem like who you are in the videos.
Your base will never grow from here if this is how you work.
If you’re prioritize reading the comments or opinions from people that are random rather than supporting the content creator that puts significant effort in making a video, I find that strange.
